IoT Ecosystem for the KORU Smart Plant Pot and Air Purifier

Botany Labs set out to create a home and workplace device that would make plant care less guesswork-dependent. KORU was conceived as a connected plant pot capable of monitoring plant conditions, running automated care programs, and providing users with remote access via a mobile application.

The company had strong plant knowledge and a clear product concept but needed additional engineering capacity to produce a working MVP. The project crossed several technical disciplines that had to operate as a single system:

• Embedded software and firmware
• Cloud-based IoT communication
• Native iOS and Android applications
• Back-end development
• Electronic and mechanical prototyping
• End-to-end system testing

The physical device needed to collect readings from its embedded sensors and send them to the cloud for storage and processing. Users, in turn, needed to view plant information, receive alerts, and control the device remotely from their smartphones.

SaM Solutions developed the software required to integrate the KORU device, cloud platform, and mobile applications into a single working IoT system.

Firmware and cloud connectivity

The team created firmware for the smart plant pot and established secure communication between the device and the cloud.

The solution enabled KORU to collect plant and device data, send it for processing, and receive commands from the mobile applications. Cloud services supported data storage, user management, notifications, and remote device control.

Mobile applications

SaM Solutions developed native applications for iOS and Android.

The apps allowed users to connect their KORU device, monitor plant conditions, manage watering and air-purification settings, receive care notifications, and review historical data.

They also included a plant database with information on more than 150 species, helping users select suitable care programs.

Hardware and software integration

Engineering partner EnCata carried out hardware development, while SaM Solutions coordinated the software integration.

Both teams worked closely throughout the project to ensure that the firmware, cloud services, mobile apps, and physical prototypes functioned together as intended. The integrated system was then tested and prepared for MVP delivery.

SaM Solutions and EnCata delivered the planned KORU MVP within the agreed timeframe and forecast budget.

The completed product integrated the physical device, embedded software, cloud services, and mobile applications into a single connected system. Botany Labs received an MVP that demonstrated the core product concept and provided a technical base for subsequent validation and product development.

By assigning the full software scope to a single delivery team and coordinating it with the hardware workstream, Botany Labs avoided managing separate firmware, cloud, back-end, and mobile vendors.

The project established a working device-to-cloud architecture in which the hardware, firmware, AWS environment, and mobile applications functioned as parts of the same product rather than as disconnected components.
