Sitecore Educational Website for Dutch Children and Teachers

Challenge
The client is a Dutch organization that trains and advises professionals working in education and childcare. It also develops innovative educational products designed to create better learning opportunities for children.
The client needed a powerful online platform that could support both teaching and independent learning. Teachers required a secure environment for managing student profiles, assignments, lessons, tests, and educational materials. Children needed a separate interface where they could practice reading and complete activities suited to their age group.
The website was intended for students between the ages of 6 and 14. Its learning activities had to help children read more quickly and effectively while expanding their vocabulary and knowledge of the world. This called for more than a conventional content website: the solution had to combine structured educational content with practical tools for teachers and interactive exercises for students.
The platform also needed to accommodate different user journeys. Teachers had to work with administrative and instructional functionality that was unavailable to students, while children needed a focused training interface without the complexity of the teaching environment. The broader learning platform included several environments, with the password-protected teachers’ tool forming a central part of the project.
Content management was another important consideration. The client required a flexible CMS foundation that could support educational materials, assignments, answer keys, exercises, magazines, and downloadable tests. Administrators had to be able to manage this content without rebuilding pages or relying on developers for routine changes.
The technical requirements extended beyond content publishing. The website needed to update selected information instantly, generate reports in PDF and XLS formats, and read spreadsheet files without requiring Microsoft Office to be installed on the server. These capabilities had to work alongside a JavaScript-intensive interface and the platform’s underlying Sitecore architecture.
Solution
SaM Solutions developed a robust educational website with distinct functionality for teachers and students. The team deployed and customized Sitecore CMS, expanded its administrative capabilities, and implemented the modules and workflows required for the client’s learning model.

Sitecore CMS implementation
The website was built on Sitecore CMS 6.5, providing a structured foundation for managing educational content and supporting separate user environments.
SaM Solutions configured and extended both the CMS and its administrative area. The team added functionality through XSLT and .NET modules, adapting the platform to the client’s specific content, user management, and teaching requirements.
The customized CMS made it possible to organize different types of educational resources within one system. Exercises, lessons, assignments, tests, answer keys, guidance materials, and student-created content could all be managed through a common platform.
Password-protected teachers’ tool
The teachers’ tool was implemented as a password-protected environment within the educational website. It gave authorized educators access to the functionality they needed to organize classroom activities and monitor student work.
Teachers could manage student profiles, lessons, and assignments from one interface. Instead of coordinating these activities through disconnected documents or systems, they could work with the relevant information directly within the website.
Separating this area from the student-facing interface also helped keep the user experience appropriate for each audience. Teachers received administrative and instructional tools, while children could concentrate on exercises and learning activities.
Educational resources for teachers
The platform provided teachers with an extensive collection of instructional materials. These resources included vocabulary exercises, answer keys, writing assignments, magazines, and guidance on different learning strategies.
The teaching materials addressed techniques such as predicting the subject of a text, clarifying ambiguous passages, summarizing information, asking relevant questions, and paraphrasing. Educators could use these resources to introduce structured reading strategies rather than presenting reading exercises in isolation.
Writing assignments supported several formats, including articles, photo strips, opinions, and games. This variety gave teachers more ways to involve students in language practice and encouraged children to work with texts from different perspectives.
Student reading-comprehension interface
SaM Solutions also developed a training environment where students could improve their reading skills. The interface introduced children to reading comprehension through exercises based on current news topics.
Using recent events gave students a practical context for developing their skills. They could work with relevant subject matter while expanding their vocabulary and learning more about the wider world.
The student interface complemented the teachers’ workspace. Educators could prepare and manage activities, while children completed assignments through a learning environment designed around their needs.
Student assignments and magazines
Magazine creation was one of the platform’s distinctive educational workflows. Students completed writing assignments that could later become part of a shared magazine.
Teachers could review an overview of the submitted assignments, select suitable work, and place it in a dedicated “magazine box.” This allowed them to compile student contributions into magazines without managing the content outside the system.
The workflow connected reading and writing practice. Children could first explore news-based materials and then produce articles, opinions, games, or other assignments inspired by their learning activities. Their completed work could subsequently be organized into a collective publication.
Printable tests and reports
Teachers could download tests in PDF format and print them for classroom use. This allowed the digital platform to support both online learning activities and conventional lessons where printed materials were more practical.
The solution also included report-generation functionality for PDF and XLS formats. These capabilities gave educators and administrators flexible ways to export information from the platform and work with it outside the website when necessary.
By supporting common document and spreadsheet formats, the website could fit more naturally into existing teaching and administrative processes.
AJAX-based data updates
SaM Solutions used AJAX technology to enable instant data actualization and display. Selected information could be refreshed without requiring users to reload an entire page.
This was particularly useful in an interactive environment where teachers managed assignments, and students worked with changing educational content. Faster updates made the interfaces feel more responsive and reduced unnecessary interruptions during routine tasks.
The website also used the AjaxPro library and extensive JavaScript functionality to support its dynamic behavior.
XLS processing without Microsoft Office
The team implemented functionality that allowed the system to read XLS files without Microsoft Office being installed on the server.
Removing this dependency simplified the server environment while preserving the spreadsheet capabilities required by the client. The website could process relevant XLS data without relying on additional desktop software or manual conversion.
Together with PDF and XLS report generation, this feature gave the educational organization practical tools for exchanging, exporting, and processing information in widely used formats.
Success
SaM Solutions delivered a Sitecore-based educational platform that brought teacher administration, instructional resources, student assignments, and interactive learning activities together within one website.
Teachers received a secure workspace for managing students, lessons, assignments, tests, and educational materials. The platform also supported practical classroom workflows through printable tests, student magazine creation, and report exports in PDF and XLS formats.
Children gained access to a dedicated training interface where they could practice reading comprehension using current news topics. The learning activities were designed to help students improve their reading technique, strengthen their vocabulary, and expand their general knowledge.
The customized Sitecore foundation gave the client a manageable environment for organizing educational content and administering the website. AJAX-based updates, JavaScript functionality, flexible reporting, and Office-independent XLS processing extended the platform beyond the capabilities of a standard content website.
As a result, the Dutch educational organization received a comprehensive digital solution that facilitated both teaching and learning while encouraging children to participate more actively in reading and writing activities.
