Development of an Automotive Infotainment System for a Global Car Manufacturer

Facing intensifying market competition and a rapid industry shift toward software-defined vehicles, the Customer needed to upgrade its in-cabin digital environment. The primary goal was to design and build an advanced embedded infotainment platform capable of elevating the overall driving experience. The company was looking for a technology partner with experience in embedded software development and a strong understanding of modern automotive platforms.

The main challenge was to create a reliable infotainment system that would improve interaction between users and the onboard computer. The solution had to combine multiple functions within a single interface, including access to real-time vehicle performance data, media management, communication features, and navigation capabilities.

SaM Solutions assembled a team of experienced embedded software engineers to build the Customer’s IVI software stack. The project centered on integrating modern human-machine interface (HMI) technologies.

The system combines an intuitive user interface with a voice-activated control mechanism. Additional development approaches helped improve system reliability and safety: the platform supports a safe driving mode that limits access to certain features when required, reducing distractions and improving the overall driving experience. Furthermore, the system includes role-based access management, adjusting accessible features and telemetry data depending on whether the user is a driver or passenger.

Key capabilities and functional modules

• Device management and content projection: Seamlessly syncs mobile devices to display smartphone content directly on the central head unit, managing connected peripherals via CAN and Ethernet buses.
• Audio and video playback: Multi-format media engine supporting streaming, local playback, and independent audio zoning across passenger seats.
• Calling and voice-based messaging: Hands-free telephony and voice-to-text messaging integrated with the vehicle’s microphone arrays and audio system.
• Advanced navigation system: Real-time mapping functionality with turn-by-turn guidance and dynamic traffic updates.
• Real-time vehicle performance analytics: On-screen visualization of telemetry data directly sourced from the onboard computer, giving drivers immediate insight into engine metrics and vehicle diagnostics.

The collaboration between SaM Solutions and the automaker has yielded a stable, commercially proven IVI solution that is now deployed across thousands of production vehicles globally.
